Because while I knew Fiona wasn't killed last week, I still didn't know how the story would end and there was a moment there when it seemed like Fiona may have been luring Delia in for a quick sucker- kill. But I should have trusted in what's now become the solid framework for an AHS finale. It runs a bit long, there's a significant time jump about halfway through (though this finale's jump was more in line with Season 1 and not with the years that passed in Asylum), and it ends on a positive note. ![]() Sure, the Harmon family were all dead back in the first year, but they were happy. And everyone who had a ruthless comeuppance coming in Asylum got what they deserved. The same can be said now for Coven, which has ended with a combination of elements from the first two seasons. Both happiness and vindication. Because not only did Delia bring witches into the mainstream, she infused life into Mrs. Robichaux's Academy. Bringing us full circle back to the X- Men dog- ears of the premiere episode. Which in turn, as AHS is wont to do, is also a parable for the societal struggles of minorities and gays. So we got the . No, not every loose strand was picked up, and there were still some bumps in the road (Zoe still never became interesting, Madison couldn't use her powers to stop Kyle from choking her?), but I was pleased with the way most everything washed out. It was often a trudge getting to the end, and even the finale gave us yet another death/rebirth (as well as Myrtle getting burned alive again), but the whole Seven Wonders test offered up a few dastardly swerves. Most notably, Misty. Who didn't survive the . Now she's stuck slicing open a living frog in bio class for all eternity. ![]() ![]() American Horror Story: Coven is the third season of the FX horror anthology television series American Horror. The Seven Wonders are upon us! The remaining young witches on American Horror Story: Coven are put to the test in the season finale airing Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 10 p. The finale episode of American Horror Story:Coven opens with the wonderful. Myrtle plays hostess with the mostess of a “Seven Wonders Last Supper,” the. They may have passed Telekinesis, but they failed Twister. Also, the moment when Madison chose to resurrect a housefly instead of Zoe was a pretty cool demonstration of her uber- bitchiness. And it became the final straw that got Delia in the game. Well, that and some encouraging words from Myrtle. Then, at least, Zoe's resurrection came with more purpose, as it was the final deed that crowned Delia the new Supreme. A new position that, thankfully, came with her old normal eyes. Fiona's smoke and mirrors trick pretty much happened the way I guessed, though I didn't anticipate her returning in such a decrepit state - barely able to stand much less take out the new Supreme. And yes, a lot of that final scene worked because you had to really think hard about Fiona and whether or not she'd kill her own daughter. Yes, Fiona said she would back when she was trying to deal with Papa Legba, but even then she admitted that her desire to kill Delia was because she was really mad at her at that moment. Not sure how Legba was able to trap her in one of his custom- made hells since they never made a deal (and she didn't have a souls to go anywhere, right?), but it was still fun to see her stuck in a horrible 5. First Dates- type catfish shack scenario. Had Zoe become the Supreme, it would have been her only redeeming quality. I guess we'll just have to settle with the fact that her dying is the reason Delia ascended to the top. I predicted Zoe would win in a feeble attempt to try and turn her into a solid character, but I'm very happy it was Delia. She's really the only pick that makes thematic sense and offers any payoff whatsoever. Everyone else was too much of a shattered mess. There was a slightly jarring moment when the girls decided that they had to press on after Misty's death. Like, right after Misty's death. With even Zoe agreeing, displaying a cold determination to focus on the tests at hand and beat Madison for the prize. But then the next test instantly turned into a silly game of tag. I mean, there's moving on and there's moving on. Going right into a light- hearted game, with all the girls laughing, felt out of sync. Because that was a hoooriibble death that had just happened. Also, not sure how Madison could become the Supreme when her heart murmur all but told us that she wasn't the pre- determined Supreme to begin with. Even if it got cured, that didn't mean she was in the running. Because, as the show told us, the Supreme was already set. Hiding in plain sight. She just needed to be zeroed in on. Never did I buy that the role was . Needless to say, y'all know I wasn't a fan of the scenes where she was playing music (with just a piano) and singing as part of the story, so there was no way I was going to accept her out of place intro music video featuring an entire prerecorded song and her lip- syncing to her old voice from over 2. The Verdict. The Coven finale wrapped most everything up while giving us the nice surprise of Delia as the new leader. Fiona's ruse wasn't unexpected, but she and Delia still had a great final scene in which Fiona confessed to neglecting Delia because she was a constant reminder of Fiona's mortality. This all happened in the epilogue portion of the episode, which has now become a calling card for AHS season enders. There were still a few head- scratching moments, but essentially . Myrtle getting burned alive again seemed to be a strange reminder of the ridiculous amount of take- backs and repeats this year offered, but at least she volunteered to go this time. The next test is concilium or mind control, during this test Madison, makes Kyle (Evan Peters) kiss her and lick her boot. Zoe then gains control and makes Kyle kiss her. Madison then makes Kyle strangle Zoe. Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) intervenes to stop them. The third test involves the girls going into the nether world. They must return before sun up or they will die and stay trapped in their own personal hell. The first of the girls to return is Queenie who found herself back at the chicken shack. Next to return is Madison who says, “I was stuck on a network musical, a live version of The Sound of Music. I wasn’t even the lead! I was Liesl.”Zoe returns and says her own hell was breaking up with Kyle over and over again. At this point all but three of the girls managed to return. In Misty’s hell, she was back to school where she had to dissect a live frog repeatedly. Time ran out for Misty and she turned to ashes. Then there were three. The girls turn the next test, transmutation, into a game of tag. During this, Zoe is impaled on top of the gate. This leads to the next test, vitalum vitalis, and they must revive something dead. Queenie tries to bring back Zoe but fails indicating she is not the next Supreme. Cordelia tells Madison to bring back Zoe but Madison refuses. Instead, Madison kills a fly and brings it back to life. Myrtle (Frances Conroy) tells Madison, “If you refuse this you don’t deserve to be Supreme.”Madison says that Zoe “lost, fair and square” and they can “either crown me or kiss my a–!”Hopeless Cordelia says, “Maybe we deserve to die out.” Myrtle tells Cordelia she “must perform the Seven Wonders.” Cordelia begins and finishes the first tests with ease. She then faces off with Madison during the divination test where they must find hidden objects in the house belonging to past Supremes. This comes easy for Cordelia but not Madison. Angry, Madison storms off telling the girls that she will expose them to TMZ in Hollywood. Madison begins packing her belongings and Kyle interrupts her and kills her for not bringing back Zoe. During this, Cordelia brings Zoe back to life, becomes the new Supreme, and regains her sight. Cordelia then gives an interview to the media where she talks about the Academy and witches. She gives an open invitation to those young women with powers to go to Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Myrtle then tells Cordelia that she must burn her at the stake for the crime she has committed against her fellow Council members. As Myrtle burns she screams, “Balenciaga!”Cordelia asks Zoe and Queenie to be part of her new council. Before opening the doors, Cordelia must take care of one more thing, Fiona. Fiona faked her death with the Axeman because she wanted to kill the next Supreme. The two reconcile and Fiona dies in Cordelia’s arms. Fiona goes to her own personal hell in the cabin with the Axeman. The show ends with Cordelia, Queenie and Zoe welcoming the new special girls to the academy. One girl asks, “What’s a Supreme?” To which Queenie replies, “You’re looking at her.”Comments.
